Six months have passed since the broadcast announcing the end of the war. Chisato's husband has still not returned from the battlefield. Believing that he will return alive, Chisato lives with her husband's brother. Every time a letter arrives, Chisato thinks it may be from her husband, but is disappointed. The postman threatens to not deliver the letter and forces a relationship with Chisato. Her brother-in-law lost his wife in an air raid. He courts Chisato, asking her to forget about his brother and be with him. The brother-in-law seeks out Chisato whenever his grandfather is not looking. Then, one day, a man who was a subordinate of Chisato's husband comes to Chisato's house...
