Rieko, a mother who lost her husband in an accident, has been living with her son Yugo. Single-handed, she works hard and Yugo has grown up to be a fine student aiming for a top university. From now on, her hard work will pay off, and once Yugo enters the workforce, a happy life will await him...or so they thought. In the summer before Yugo's graduation next year, the Hiraokas meet with their homeroom teacher, Shiraishi, for a career consultation. After a promising three-way meeting, Rieko is left alone in the classroom and is told that there is a problem with Yugo's further education.
